Caveat – we had permission to post the picture attached to this posting, However, we also covered the students faces with happy faces to protect their privacy!
Today, we had the distinct pleasure of welcoming 23 enthusiastic grade 7 students, their dedicated teacher, and a supportive parent chaperone from Quarterway Elementary School in Nanaimo to The White Hatter Studio. Their visit was more than just a tour, it was an opportunity for them to harness technology in a positive and impactful way.
A Classroom News Show Inspires an Invitation
This all started a few weeks ago when we came across a TV news story featuring a teacher who had engaged her class in a unique and innovative way. Instead of limiting technology in the classroom, she embraced its potential, guiding her students to create their own school news show. With creativity and resourcefulness, the students and their teacher pieced together the necessary hardware and software to produce a broadcast that aired throughout their school.
We were so impressed by their initiative that we extended an invitation for them to visit our studio in Victoria. Our goal was to inspire and mentor these young creators, showing them what was possible with professional equipment while giving them the chance to record an episode of their school news show in our fully equipped broadcast studio – they took us up on our offer.
A Hands-On Learning Experience
Upon arrival, and after a quick show an tell of the studio, the students quickly got to work, taking on various broadcasting roles with enthusiasm. Under the guidance of The White Hatter Team, they operated cameras, managed sound, and delivered news segments just like professional broadcasters. Watching them collaborate, problem-solve, and build confidence in their skills was truly inspiring.
At the end of the session, Brandon shared his personal journey into the world of digital media and technology, offering insights into how becoming a good digital citizen and using technology positively can open doors to exciting and fulfilling careers. The students were eager to ask questions, not just about the studio but about the broader possibilities of technology in their future.
Celebrating Positive Youth Engagement with Technology
Far too often, we hear negative stories about how youth use technology. While it’s important to address risks, we also need to recognize and celebrate the countless ways young people are using technology for creativity, education, and connection. This group of students is a perfect example of how technology can be a force for good when guided by supportive educators and mentors within a classroom environment. We know they will be taking back ideas from this visit to integrate their classroom broadcasting set.
At The White Hatter, we are committed to empowering youth, parents, and educators by highlighting the positive impact of technology. This visit reinforced what we already know, when given the opportunity, and with age appropriate mentorship, young people will rise to the challenge, innovate, and inspire.
To educators and parents: How can you encourage your students and children to use technology in a meaningful and productive way?
