How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Landscape of Online Sexual Exploitation: What Parents Need to Know

January 26, 2025

Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many aspects of modern life, offering incredible benefits in areas such as healthcare, education, and entertainment. However, like any powerful tool, it can also be misused and weaponized. Here at The White Hatter, we’ve seen firsthand how AI is being weaponized to exploit youth in alarming ways. Over the past 14 months, we’ve worked with teens and their families who were impacted by the following AI-driven tactics:

Deepfake Nudes Created and Weaponized by Classmates

Deepfake technology allows users to create hyper-realistic but entirely fake images or videos by using AI to blend and manipulate real images. (1)(2) This technology has been weaponized by some youth against their peers. For instance, classmates have taken innocent photos of their peers, often sourced from social media, and used AI to create explicit deepfake nudes. These images are then shared online, sometimes accompanied by harmful rumours, bullying, or extortion.

The psychological and reputational damage caused by such actions can be significant. Victims often feel humiliated, violated, and powerless, as the dissemination of these images can be difficult or even impossible to fully contain.

AI-Based Companionship Apps That Enable Inappropriate Interactions

AI-powered companionship apps, designed to simulate conversations and relationships, are another tool being exploited. (3) These apps often market themselves as harmless tools for entertainment or emotional support. However, offenders can use them to lure youth into inappropriate, text-based communications.

Teens may turn to these apps out of curiosity, boredom, loneliness, or a desire for connection. Once engaged, the AI can be manipulated by malicious actors to steer conversations toward inappropriate or harmful topics. In some cases, youth may not even realize they are being targeted, as the AI is adept at mimicking natural and engaging interactions.

AI as a Tool for Sextortion

Sextortion involves coercing individuals into sharing explicit images or videos, often under the threat of exposure or harm. (4) AI is now being used to enhance this crime. For example, malicious actors can use AI to create fake personas that are more convincing, making it easier to manipulate and deceive their targets through pictures and live streaming video. They may also use AI to generate fake evidence, such as fabricated nudes, to pressure victims into compliance.

The anonymity and scalability of AI-driven sextortion make it especially dangerous and offenders can simultaneously target multiple victims, increasing their reach and impact internationally.

The misuse of AI in online exploitation is a rapidly evolving challenge, but there are some proactive steps parents and caregivers can take to protect their children:

  • Educate yourself about the latest trends and technologies, including how AI can be misused. Follow trusted sources like us here at The White Hatter for updates on online safety.

  • Create a safe space for your kids to talk about their online experiences. Discuss the risks of sharing personal information and images online, and emphasize that they can come to you if something feels off.

  • Teach your kids how to critically evaluate the technology and apps they use. Help them understand that not everything online is trustworthy, and they should always question interactions that seem too good to be true.

  • If your child becomes a victim, act quickly. Report the incident to relevant authorities, and consider reaching out to organizations like The White Hatter for guidance and support.

The rise of artificial intelligence has undoubtedly transformed our lives in many positive ways, but it has also introduced complex challenges, particularly in protecting children from online exploitation. AI-driven tools, such as deepfake technology, companionship apps, and sextortion schemes, are being weaponized to target and harm youth in ways that are increasingly difficult to detect and prevent. These risks demand a proactive and informed response from parents, caregivers,  educators, law enforcement, and the community as a whole.

Understanding the problem is the first step toward addressing it. Deepfake nudes, for example, illustrate how seemingly innocent images shared online can be manipulated into explicit content, causing significant emotional, psychological, and reputational harm. Similarly, AI powered companionship apps, designed to simulate relationships, can be exploited by offenders to manipulate youth into inappropriate conversations. Sextortion schemes amplified by AI add yet another layer of danger, as offenders use fake personas and fabricated evidence to coerce victims. These emerging threats highlight the importance of staying ahead of technological trends and recognizing the vulnerabilities AI can create.

As parents and caregivers, you play a critical role in safeguarding your children. Open communication between you and your child is essential and creates a safe, judgment-free space where your kids feel comfortable discussing their online experiences, no matter how uncomfortable or confusing those might be. Help them understand the risks of oversharing personal information and the importance of privacy, even with friends or platforms they trust. Encourage them to critically evaluate the apps and technologies they use, teaching them that not everything online is as it appears.

Staying educated on the ever evolving onlife world is crucial. Follow reliable resources like us here at The White Hatter for updates on online safety and strategies for navigating these challenges. Equip yourself with knowledge about AI misuse so you can have informed discussions with your children and recognize warning signs of potential exploitation.

If your child falls victim to AI-driven exploitation, act swiftly. Report the incident to law enforcement and other appropriate authorities. Seek support from organizations like us, which can provide guidance and resources tailored to your family’s situation. Remember, swift action can limit harm and provide a sense of security and resolution for your child.

By combining awareness, education, and open dialogue, parents can empower their children to navigate the onlife world in a safer and more responsible way. While the misuse of AI presents undeniable challenges, proactive parenting and community efforts can help to minimize these risks, and ensure that technology continues to be a tool for empowerment rather than harm.

At The White Hatter, we remain vigilant. As new forms of weaponized AI targeting youth and teens emerge, we are committed to sharing this critical information with the young people, parents, caregivers, and educators who rely on us. Knowledge and the understanding and application of that knowledge is power!

Here’s an excellent YouTube video recently produced and released by ‘WeProtect’ that powerfully addresses the concerns discussed in this article. It’s highly recommended to watch this video together as a family, and use it as a starting point for meaningful discussions about digital literacy and internet safety when it comes to online sexual predation and exploitation.
