Most Teens Using Tech & Social Media In A Positive Way – Case In Point

July 14, 2024

When technology and social media are introduced and managed by parents and caregivers in an age-appropriate and guided manner, they can offer significant opportunities for post-secondary education and future careers as teens transition into young adulthood.

Take Kiegan, also known as “Citrine’s Animations” on his social media channels – link below (1). Kiegan began using technology and social media in middle school, which sparked his interest in coding and digital animation. Through self-teaching via social media platforms like YouTube, Kiegan honed his skills, leading to his acceptance into the prestigious Vancouver Film School’s intensive 12-month 3D animation program, even before graduating high school. His acceptance into the program came while he was still in Grade 11, showcasing the potential for a bright future in 3D animation.

Kiegan’s parents, whom we know well, effectively guided his use of technology. They prioritized being responsible parents over being best friends when it came to his tech and social media usage. They ensured he had age-appropriate and supervised reasonable access to technology from a young age. It wasn’t about “no” technology, it was all about “know technology”. It wasn’t about “delay is the way” it was all about “pave the way” via digital literacy, age-appropriate access, and age-appropriate use of technology, and good onlife parenting that provided Kiegan with the opportunities that led to his successes thus far. Kiegan’s future as a professional 3D animation creator looks extremely promising!

Kiegan’s positive experience with technology and social media is a story we frequently hear from both teens and their parents. While some teens may face significant challenges with tech and social media, Kiegan’s story illustrates that, for many, these tools can be incredibly beneficial if approached in the right way by teens and their parents or caregivers.
