In our blog article, “Cash Apps and Prepaid Cards for Youth: What Parents Need to Know!” (1), and in our chapter on “Intimate Images, Nudes, Sexting, Deepfakes, and Sugaring” (2) from our free web book “Parenting In An Online World” for parents (3), we discuss an app called “unlockt.me” (4), which has a logo that closely resembles the CashApp icon.
Unlockt.me is a simplified monetization app available for both Apple and Android devices, allowing users to charge others for access to pictures or videos behind a paywall. While the app is intended for users 18 and older, younger teens could easily bypass this age restriction. Although Unlockt.me’s Terms of Service prohibit the selling of “sexual or pornographic content” on their app, a quick search on Instagram and TikTok reveals several accounts selling foot photos (“piggy pics,” grippers, “footography”), nudes, and other intimate images, with links to unlockt.me attached, usually in their bio.
If you discover this app on your teen’s phone, take a moment to ask why they have it. While there may be an innocent reason, such as selling their artwork or music, it’s important to consider other possibilities.
NOTE – This app takes a 20% cut in sales, which is similar to OnlyFans.
Knowledge, and the understanding and application of that knowledge is power!
