What Parents & Caregivers Need to Know About How Youth Are Bypassing Parental Controls To Access Snapchat and TikTok

December 14, 2024

This afternoon we helped a parent who was bewildered by the fact that their child was still able to access Snapchat on their phone, even though they had blocked the use of the app on their child’s device.

Many parents, caregivers, and educators might be surprised to learn that Snapchat and TikTok are not limited to its mobile app for access. These two platforms can also be accessed through any web browser by visiting Snapchat.com or TikTok.com. This means that even if the app is removed or blocked, youth can still log in and use Snapchat and TikTok on devices like phones, Chromebooks, laptops, or iPads or any other digital device that can connect to the internet including some gaming consoles – techniques commonly shared by youth with one another to bypass parent and caregiver oversight.

While you can block the Snapchat and TikTok website on certain browsers, it’s essential to understand that a single device can host multiple browsers – often more than most parents and caregivers realize.

Hundreds of web browsers are available, catering to different platforms and preferences. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most common ones:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari
  • Microsoft Edge
  • OperaBrave
  • Tor Browser
  • DuckDuckGo
  • Privacy Browser
  • Midori
  • Falkon
  • Lynx
  • Samsung Internet
  • UC Browser
  • Kiwi Browser
  • Puffin
  • Opera
  • GXPale
  • MoonMaxthon
  • SeaMonkey

Given the open-source nature of web technologies, new browsers are constantly emerging almost weekly, making it challenging to monitor all possible access points.

Even if you block Snapchat’s or TikTok’s web version, there are other methods youth, and teens, might employ to access these two platforms such as:

  • Web Proxies or Mirror Sites – Proxy websites can act as “backdoors” to platforms like Snapchat, though these are often blocked quickly for security reasons.

  • App Emulators or Third-Party Tools – Services like BlueStacks (an app emulator) or unauthorized tools like SnapTools claim to provide Snapchat access outside the official app. However, these methods come with significant risks, including potential account bans and compromised privacy.

So, what can parents and caregivers do specific to Snapchat and TikTok if you are looking to minimize access? To safeguard your child’s online experience, consider the following steps:

  • Yes, Block Snapchat’s Web Access – Use parental controls or network tools to block snapchat.com and TikTok.com – just remember these can still be bypassed as mentioned above, but it is a good first step.

  • Monitor Installed Browsers – Regularly check for new or unfamiliar browsers on your child’s devices.

  • Consider a Minimalist Phone for Youth and Younger Teens – phones like the Wisephone or the Pinwheel phone do not allow any kind of browser access to the internet.

  • Encourage Open Communication and digital literacy education – Help your child understand that using platforms through official, secure channels is the safest way to engage online.

While it’s important to take precautions, remember that no solution is foolproof. Teaching kids about responsible internet use and the potential risks of unauthorized access is the most effective way to ensure their safety. By staying informed and fostering open communication, you can empower your child to navigate the onlife world with confidence and caution.
